This third-year Black Bear cub has found a seemingly precarious place to rest in an old poplar tree. It’s early spring, the perfect season for poplar buds! Black Bears will climb up one tree, feast on the buds, then climb down and move on to the next tree; as you can see, it’s exhausting work. Poplar trees like this one can reach heights of over 100 feet tall and can sway several feet from side to side on a windy day. Black Bears have a certain instinctual comfort with these dizzying heights – thus the title Aloft.
