Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado
Mesa Verde National Park is an arid canyon region on the southern tip of the Colorado Plateau. 1,400 years ago, this is where the Ancestral Pueblo people chose to settle, and for 700 years they flourished long before the first European settlers ever arrived in North America. Visiting this place was a remarkable experience, and it was fascinating to see the ways in which this ancient community built in harmony with nature – with architecture that blends seamlessly into the timeless landscape.
Unfortunately, I was not blessed with the weather I wanted for most of my trip – the clouds kept away the light that would normally bring these canyons to life. However, on my last evening in Mesa Verde, the sun broke through to produce an exquisite glow on the face of this ruin built into the side of the canyon wall. As I went back through my exposures from this trip, I thought about the people that once lived here, and for an instant in this image, I could clearly envision the robust community who once called this window their own.
