Clinch Mountain Wildlife Refuge, VA
Tennessee State Museum
As a boy, my father took me fishing in this stream, so it is a place of incredible personal significance. Naturally, when I acquired my first panoramic camera, this was one of the places that became a proving ground for me, as I attempted some of my first panoramic exposures. For this image I ended up climbing up on the tree you see extending over the stream in order to get the perfect vantage point of the tumbling creek below. I was experimenting with long exposures that day, as I knew it would accentuate the motion of the water spilling over the tiered rocks. Because I was learning, I remember that the exact exposure was 47 seconds. Carefully studying the results in the exposed film the following week, there were more failures than successes. However, I fell ever deeper in love with the panoramic format and the results rendered by demanding that my techniques evolve to match my vision and passion for a particular location.
