Many patterns in the natural world evoke strong emotions, but I would argue that no pattern in nature is more evocative than the entrancing rosettes of the leopard. The pharaohs of ancient Egypt proudly wore the pelt of the leopard as a symbol of all that was noble, courageous, and honorable. In West Africa, the leopard has long been a symbol of wisdom. Today, from New York to Milan, the leopard’s alluring pattern is presented as high fashion.
In my first fleeting encounters with leopards on safari, my mind developed a vision of what I wanted to capture – an encompassing, larger than life image of the leopard’s pattern. But I also knew my vision hinged upon one-in-a-million odds that I’d ever have the perfect proximity to create such an image. Then it happened, without warning a regal female that I’d spotted in a tree, exited her perch, and paused on a bare rock just a few meters from my truck as she surveyed the landscape. To my astonishment, her entire body, including her tail came to rest in the same focal plane. I worked quickly, and moments later she was gone. The resulting image presides like royalty atop my most coveted collection of images.
