Caddo Lake State Park, Texas / Louisiana
Though most people experience this old millpond from a canoe, paddling beneath the bald cypress, I found myself instead enamored by the canopy above. Using a nearby pier to gain a higher vantage point allowed the near-abstract cypress forest to become the subject.
The scene feels almost woven together: layers of silvery Spanish moss draping the bald cypress, casually accented by the fading colors of autumn—small touches of burnt sienna. I included just enough of the cypress knees in the lower right to provide a sense of place but wanted the eye to remain lost in the canopy. For me, that abstraction better captures the mystery of this landscape—less about where you are, and more about the texture, the mood, and the feeling of this remarkable place.
