The jewel-like colors of a Lilac Breasted Roller and the wispy branches of the Weeping Accacia stand in stark contrast to a pure white sky. Aside from the iconic subjects and unusual perspective, one key element in this image is actually a common “limitation” of photography, where a single photographic exposure can’t “see” as much dynamic range as the human eye. In this image for example, when the Roller and tree branches are properly exposed, the sky ends up being significantly overexposed. In this instance, I leaned into this “limitation” by photographing the rollers that frequented the tree at a time of day when this contrast would be most extreme (when the roller was slightly backlit) as I knew the white sky would provide an ethereal background for the whimsical branches and brilliant colors of the Roller.
