By chance, I was leaving a mid-summer meeting at Antler Hill Village, marveling at Biltmore’s fields of sunflowers and corn, when two key elements caught my eye. A single sunflower stood proudly above the rest, and the warm summer day was producing storm clouds. This combination had me rush downtown to grab my cameras. When I returned, a passing shower had come and gone creating a light mist rising from the river beyond the fields – the finishing touch to an already exceptional scene. I call this image Summer Day as it reminds me of the long drives I took with my father as a boy – the fields full of crops that border a river, the warm sun shining down, and a rain that barely registered on the day’s events – all hallmarks of Summer in Appalachia.
