This juvenile gorilla climbed up the stalks of bamboo until he was on my eye level and then paused – quietly studying the strange intruder to his jungle home. The young gorilla’s ease and posture reminded me of a young human child standing on the threshold of their home – the place they feel safe – peering at the outsiders passing by. I often tell people that trekking in to see the mountain gorillas is a transcendent experience, one reason why is clearly seen in this image – they are witnessing us as much as we are witnessing them.
