Caddo Lake State Park, Texas / Louisiana
Hidden within a snaking maze of bayou channels lies one of the most striking natural halls I’ve ever encountered. What now feels like a cathedral of bald cypress draped in Spanish moss began as a feat of engineering. In the 1870s, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredged this remarkably straight channel as a shortcut for steamboats traveling between Jefferson, Texas and Shreveport, Louisiana. Nearly a century and a half later, nature has softened its edges, transforming a former corridor of commerce into something infinitely more alluring, perplexing, and mysterious. With the nearby town bearing the all-too fitting name Uncertain, the title seemed inevitable.
